The Cotuit Fire District recently completed a comprehensive feasibility study to determine the future of the former Cotuit Elementary School. Built in 1955, the building has served many roles in our village, but time has taken its toll. The structure remains sound, but nearly every system—from plumbing and electrical to heating and accessibility—requires major updates or complete replacement.
ICON Architecture and their consultants at Tighe & Bond evaluated the site and presented three options for the property:
- Option 1: Demolition – Estimated project cost $1.8 million
- Option 2: Community Center – Estimated project cost $14.2 million
- Option 3: Recreation Center – Estimated project cost $11.1 million
These options were developed with input from engineers, architects, and environmental consultants and include projected costs, code compliance considerations, and conceptual designs.
The future of the school building will be discussed and voted on at the Annual District Meeting on May 28. Article 3 proposes the demolition and disposal of the building, while Article 4 proposes a minimum four-month delay to allow for continued study and discussion.
The full report and concept plans are available on our website. We encourage all residents to review the material and attend the meeting—this decision will shape a key part of our village’s future.
